Beck worked last year with singer Jamie Lidell on his new forthcoming album The Compass. He produced, recorded and co-wrote songs, as well as performed on several others. Sessions began early last year and continued in the summer. The album will be out in May but you can hear the first song “The Compass,” which was recorded by Beck at Oceanway Studios (where Sea Change and Mutations were done) and features him on acoustic guitar and percussion.

Brian LeBarton interviews James Gadson
A note from Brian:

Here is a special interview and music listening session I conducted with the legendary drummer James Gadson courtesy of Marfa Public Radio. We take a chronological trip down his amazing career and discuss the stories behind each track. James has drummed on “Dancing Machine” (Jackson 5), “Use Me” (Bill Withers),”I Want You” (Marvin Gaye), “I Will Survive” (Gloria Gaynor), Smokey Robinson, Sinatra, Ray Charles, the Saturday Night Fever soundtrack, the list goes on. At last count he has played on over 300 Gold records. James was generous enough to let me into his home, the very room he used to rehearse with Bill Withers in, his anecdotes were inspiring and his attitude towards the future was bright as ever. Please enjoy.

Melanie Pullen
Colorspace is pleased to present an installation of Melanie Pullen's photographic series Violent Times. Comprised of large-scale lightboxes and photographic prints, the exhibition explores the depiction of war beginning with the fantasy and glamour of historic painting, progressing toward the reality conveyed in modern photography. Pullen says, "In Violent Times, I dramatized the aesthetics of early portraiture and battle imagery, creating an extensive series that questions our perceptions and our ingrained desire to glamorize violence." The historic use of imagery, style, and presentation has been modernized in Violent Times, with the use of saturated films, special lighting techniques, digital processes and modern printing methods. The effect is a highly stylized and cinematic representation of war that questions the accuracy and reliability of the mass media both current and historic.

We have a new show going on in our Colorspace page now. Check out the store to pick up an exclusive, limited edition Melanie Pullen T-Shirt, available here only as long as the show.

Saxx Laws from Beck Hansen on Vimeo.

This was a bonus video we made during the shoot for the Sexx Laws video. Bass player Justin (JMJ) volunteered to dress up as a Kenny G style Smooth Jazz soprano sax player and serenade the destruction wrought by the day glo football team. (Coincidentally, Kenny G sat behind me on a flight to Seattle (regrettably not Ojai) a few months after this shoot). It was shot in a few takes before the lunch break and assembled later during the editing for the actual clip, essentially for our own amusement. The track came about when the idea arose to get some one to do a Smooth Jazz arrangement of the song instead of a remix. The music was played by the band, except for the sax player, who was an actual jazz session player. The track beautifully evokes the abandon of smooth. Its a little long, but if you stay with it, it will reward you with a smooth outlook for the rest of the day.

"One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong"

Record Club: Songs Of Leonard Cohen "One Of Us Cannot Be Wrong" from Beck Hansen on Vimeo.

We're 5 months into the Record Club project now, and it's time for our third installment.

This one took place last June when Wilco was in town for the release of their new eponymous album. They came by after a long day filming a TV appearance and still managed to put down 8 songs with us. Jamie Lidell was in the studio with me working on his new record. Leslie Feist happened to be in town editing her documentary and heard we were all getting together. Recording took place at Sunset Sound Studios in the room where the Stones did a lot of Exile On Main Street (and looking at the records on the walls it appeared that the Doobie Brothers recorded most of their output there too). Sitting in on drums, we had James Gadson, who's played on most of the Bill Withers records and on songs like 'Express Yourself' and 'I Will Survive.' Jeff Tweedy's son Spencer played played additional drums. Also, Brian Lebarton, from the last two Record Club sessions is back.

The record chosen this time was Skip Spence's 'Oar.' Running sequentially, the first song up is "Little Hands". Our friend Danny Kalb engineered.

For those of you who are wondering what the deal is with this Record Club thing, please read on below.

Record Club is an informal meeting of various musicians to record an album in a day. The album chosen to be reinterpreted is used as a framework. Nothing is rehearsed or arranged ahead of time. A track is put up here once a week. As you will hear, some of the songs are rough renditions, often first takes that document what happened over the course of a day as opposed to a polished rendering. There is no intention to 'add to' the original work or attempt to recreate the power of the original recording. Only to play music and document what happens. And those who aren't familiar with the albums in question will hopefully look for the songs in their definitive versions.

Midnite Vultures 10th Anniversary
Today is the 10th anniversary of the release of Midnite Vultures. Released in the weeks leading up to the Y2K scare, while Nu Metal and Boy Bands were storming the charts, the record was a satirically bent experiment in R & B, funk, and general millennial weirdness, as well as anticipating some of the 80's revival to come in the next decade.

With artwork designed by Eye from the band the Boredoms and freak out videos referencing Japanese children's show, William Klein and men's support groups, the album launched a two year tour extravaganza that combined an R & B soul review with Fluxus performance art and a road side accident site.

We've added the album to our music page Collected Works. This week we'll be putting up videos, rare b-sides and other surprises commemorating the anniversary

Here is the lead off video from 1999's Midnite Vultures, directed by Beck and featuring a young Jack Black, as well as a cast of Japanese robots, space ninjas, a hermaphrodite bass player (who plays a kitchen broom with a cleaver attached), anthropomorphized appliances and a zebra headed banjo player. Part surrealist tableaux, part satirical commentary on masculinity, and a bit of homage to filmmaker William Klein's masterpiece of political weirdness, Mr. Freedom, the clip won the award for video of the year in Japan while at the same time being featured on MTV's special 'Worst Videos of All Time.' The original version had an 8 minute intro, marking the emotional upheavals and breakthroughs of the 'Vision Warriors Men's Circle' support group. Without saying, MTV rejected the 8 minute opening opting for the shortened 10 second intro. In the future we will share the original version in its unadulterated form

As you may have heard, Beck has spent most of the last year writing and producing an album for Charlotte Gainsbourg, which gets released internationally in December and domestically in January. We have the first video from the album for the single 'Heaven Can Wait', which was recorded in April of last year. FOUND MUSIC Nº4: Harry Partch
Harry Partch was a composer of what is termed Microtonal music. He developed his own systems of tonality using frequencies and notes found between those in western traditions. He felt they could elicit emotions and reactions from the listener conventional tonality couldn't. He built his own proprietary instruments to play his work. Similar in the sound to instruments found in eastern music such as the koto, taiko, or gamelan, they are ultimately uncategorizable. He spent years traveling as a hobo during the depression and incorporated everyday speech into his melodic lines. He transcribed graffiti and used it as text. He is one of the great musical thinkers and innovators of the last century. Here are a few clips from one of his last major works "Delusion Of The Fury":

We have a new Beck song that we'll be putting up later today called "Harry Partch." Its a tribute to the composer and his desire to make the body and music unified into what he termed 'Corporeality.' The song employs Partch's 43 tone scale, which expands conventional tonality into a broader variation of frequencies and resonances

A thruway from the external to the internal, in tribute to California bred composer Harry Partch's concept of 'Corporeality'--- the integration of the body with all art forms. The song uses a 43 tone scale in reference to Partch's innovations with alternate tonalities. A peregrination across disparate territory to ascertain an unassumed frame of reference.

FOUND MUSIC Nº3: Bernard Szajner
This time we have a record from french artist Bernard Szajner, inventor of the 'laser harp', released in 1980. It is mostly instrumental and seems to be some kind of a concept piece. The cover featuring a metallic hand clutching an extinguished candle acts as the heavy fist disrupting the new age mellowness of the electronic instrumental records of the time. You can hear echos of it in bands like Air and Daft Punk. Somewhere between prog, electronic and early 80's horror movie soundtrack, it's doesn't really fit into any of those categories.

JTV: 1: Bush Cutter George from Beck Hansen on Vimeo.

When we were on tour in Japan earlier this year, we noticed that whenever the TV in the hotel was turned on, invariably something weird or amazing would come on. Whether a children's program, a game show or a commercial, it was like some clue or piece of the cultural puzzle in trying to decipher the vast aggregation of traditions, trend and pop phenomena that make up the place. A few minutes a day we started making short clips of what was on the TV with our digital cameras. At the end of the tour we ended up with a small collection of fragments, which have been put together to be posted here as a sort of ephemeral artifact of the trip. The first clip is from a show that seemed to feature new lawn mowers and agricultural equipment. The mower in this clip is called 'Bush Cutter George,' which is either someone's idea of a double entendre, or an apt mechanical metaphor for how the Bush administration operated for much of it's eight year run.

"Winter Lady"

Record Club: Songs Of Leonard Cohen "Winter Lady" from Beck Hansen on Vimeo.

Our next record is from 70's Japanese electronic pop pioneers, YMO, also known as Yellow Magic Orchestra. They were seen as a sort of counterpart to bands like Kraftwerk or Devo, because of their early experimentation with electronic instruments, social commentary and conceptual visuals. BGM was their fourth album, released in 1981. BGM stands for background music. With it's early 80's synth pop sound, it also contains some early forays into ambient and drone, and, possibly, the first recorded Japanese rap song. Here are some clips:

This week's track is the last installment of the first Record Club series. Thanks again to all who participated. The next Record Club featuring Devendra Banhart, MGMT, Wolfmother and Little Joy will kick off next week.

We are now launching our new music section, a library of all Beck releases. Here you will find lyrics and audio clips for every song as well as background information for each record. We will be adding albums one at a time starting with Mellow Gold and Modern Guilt.

Mellow Gold Videos
We are adding all the videos made for 1994's Mellow Gold. This was Beck's first full length album release and these are first attempts in the video form. They were mostly home made with little budget and even borrowed film, with Director Steve Hanft and friends. Loser was made with a two man crew, director Steve Hanft and Beck himself. The moving coffin was a reference to Bunuel's film Simon Of The Desert. The effect was achieved by using stop frame animation, where Beck and Steve would have to move the coffin an inch at a time then shoot a frame of film. This process continued over a year long period. Also look for cameos by folk dancer Jesco, as well as Eddie Lopez, who built the sculpture on the cover of the Mellow Gold album, playing Beck's guitar 'Jazzercise' on the roof of the garage where he lived and worked. The video also contains footage of Beck's leaf blower performance at famed club Raji's in the early 90's. As a performance piece, he covered the stage with leaves, came out and blew them into the audience then recited a monologue. The Beercan video was a performance piece involving actual homeless people from Downtown Los Angeles who were asked to invade a suburban house and destroy it. This was documented, then edited together in a collage with performance footage as well as a series of recreations of old magazine advertisements from the 60's and 70's. Look for a cameo by Buzz Osbourne from the Melvins playing guitar in his backyard as well as driving a forklift. The third video is a clip for Pay No Mind, shot mostly in Echo Park and featuring found footage from an episode of 70's show 'In Search Of...' hosted by Leonard Nimoy Look in the videoteque to see these Mellow Gold era documents.
